Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic - As a true tradition, every April 6th we celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. It began in 2014, so we are now in its twelfth year.
In 2013, the United Nations (UN) proclaimed April 6th as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, in commemoration of the date on which the First Olympic Games of the Modern Era were held in Athens, Greece, and inaugurated by King George I at the Panathenaic Stadium.
The most important objective of this day is to raise public awareness about the role of sport in promoting human rights and the social and economic development of countries. This year's theme is: Leveling the Playing Field: Sport for Social Inclusion
The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) is a true opportunity to highlight and promote the role of sport in fostering peace, social inclusion, and sustainable development, while inviting different organizations to share perspectives, plans, and reflections on the impact of sport in their respective communities and areas of work.
On the occasion of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, Peace and Sport, of which Prince Albert II of Monaco is patron, launched the #WhiteCard campaign from its headquarters in Monaco.
#Whitecard is a global digital campaign created by Peace and Sport to celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, since holding a White Card, like a referee, is an action that symbolizes the great positive power of sport worldwide.
